Bomb threats have circulated through text messages sent to members of University of the East Caloocan (UE) Caloocan on Thursday morning, February 29. Texts were reportedly sent out to students, as well as members of the faculty and administration.
At around 11:22 in the morning, text messages were received stating that there are five bombs situated inside the campus.
One message was addressed to a certain student leader running under the Tinig ng Silangan Party Alliance. The message further stated that it will give the student leader until 03:30 PM to locate the bombs or else casualties will be incurred.
However, the Caloocan City Police denied such bomb scare, citing that reports from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and UE Security confirmed that no bomb scares have circulated around the campus.
The UE Caloocan school administration, on the other hand, has yet to give an official statement regarding the issue.
Election woes
Prior to the threat, UE Caloocan is conducting its university student council elections. The elections have begun on Wednesday, February 27. The official tally of votes for the student council elections of the College of Business Administration (CBA), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), and College of Fine Arts, Architecture, and Design (CFAD) have been released on the evening of the election itself.
However, partial tallying for the Central Student Council (CSC) and College of Engineering Student Council (CEN SC) occurred prior to the technical difficulties encountered particularly in the College of Engineering at around 12 noon of Wednesday. Students who casted their votes in the later afternoon have been urged to recast their votes due to the situation, prompting the UE Caloocan Student Council Commission on Elections to move the final tallying of votes and proclamation of the CEN SC and the CSC on Friday, March 1.
Meanwhile, the National Union of Students of the Philippines Metro Manila expressed its concern over the events that transpired following the UE Caloocan student council elections.
“The council elections started on Wednesday, February 27 and was postponed due to technical difficulties in some colleges. The vote counting to reach the conclusion of the central student council elections is scheduled tomorrow, March 1,” said NUSP Metro Manila in a statement.
Despite these events, the Union is hopeful that the student council elections will conclude safely. May the students exercise their right to vote and elect genuine student leaders that will represent them.” the youth alliance said.
