The April 28 Coalition focuses on Refugees and their situations on its 3rd online Forum-Protest

6 June 2020. The April 28 Coalition [for Migrants’ and Refugees’ Rights and Welfare]* staged its 3rd Online Forum – Protest focusing on Refugees and Refugees Situation on June 6. This protest is a continuation of the series of actions as the Coalitions continue to call for the granting of full citizenship rights for all migrants, refugees and displaced peoples among other things.

The program included series of speeches from an invited speaker and two reactors, interspersed with chanting of the Coalition’s calls and cultural presentations. Majed Abusalama, a member of the Palestine Speaks Coalition-Berlin was the Speaker. Being born in a refugee camp in Gaza open air prison, he later become and still is, a staunch human rights defender and an award winning journalist. As a refugee himself, he narrated his long and continuing journey of being with grassroots organisations of mainly POCs and Palestinians in advancing the fight for basic human rights, and their enduring call for a free Palestine. He reiterated the need for a radical change, to push the boundaries and mobilise for more grassroots movements to attain our basic rights.

Abusalama’s inspiring at the same time challenging speech was followed by a heartfelt poetry reading by Nora Rajab, also a member of the Palestine Speaks Coalition Berlin. The poems she read were written by Mahmoud Darwish, a famous Palestinian poet and intellectual. They captured the persistent longing of many displaced Palestinians to return to their homeland and lead a simple normal life, as well as their spirit and determination to fight for it.

Phil Butland from Die Linke Berlin Internationals, in his reaction, agreed that many Refugees in Germany are from Palestine. In fact, he says many are already displaced more than once. According to him, there have been a rise of anti-racism demonstrations in Berlin. He was in a huge Black Lives Matter demonstration in Berlin as he delivered his statement, and noted that it is highly multi-racial and the biggest he had seen so far. He is hopeful that people will continue to see where the world is really going and the need to get together to change this course.

The second reactor is George Porgetto from Free African Movement. Porgetto drew a lot from his own long experience of a decade long struggle be it in the parliament or in the streets. He criticized that the very institutions that legislate policies and laws fail to heed the rights and welfare of migrants and refugees. He likewise emphasized the importance of uniting together in order to win the struggle.

As a synthesis, Yasmin Ahmed of Revolutionaire Einheit echoed that most people who migrate are forced to do so or displaced not on their will. She furthered elaborated the sorry state of Refugees in different European Countries and the need to work together to change these.

The Forum Protest ended with a reverberating chanting of the demands of the Coalition: Full Citizenship Rights for ALL Migrants and Refugees, GRANT NOW! Bail Out Migrants, Not Corporate Giants, and Long live International Solidarity!

MANILA — A Cebu local court ordered today, June 8, the release of eight activists, according to the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) Cebu.

Judge Jenelyn Villaceran Forrosuelo of the Cebu City Municiapl Trial Court in Cities Branch 4 issued the release order without requiring bail.

The eight were arrested June 5 while holding a protest against the anti-terror bill inside the UP Cebu campus. They are Jaime Paglinawan of Bayan-Central Visayas, Joahanna Veloso of National Unionf of Students of the Philippines, UP Diliman alumnus Al Ingking, Bern Cañedo of Youth against Tyranny-Cebu, Dyan Gumanao of Aninaw Productions and Kabataan Partylist, Janry Ubal of Food Not Bombs Cebu, and Clement Corominas.

Charges filed against the eight were violations of Batas Pambansa 880, Republic Act 11332 or Law on Reporting Communicable Diseases and disobedience to persons in authority. The defense is given ten days to comment on the charges.

Lawyers of the activists from NUPL-Cebu thanked all those who supported their clients.

In a statement, NUPL-Cebu said the arrest of the Cebu 8 bolsters the call for the junking of the anti-terror bill. “Impelled by the current administraion’s flagrant disregard for our freedoms of speech, expression, assembly, and association, this legislation creates a legal justification for the commission of human rights violations.”

On the same day that the eight were arrested, local officials and employees celebrated Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella’s birthday at the city’s water district building. (https://www.bulatlat.com)

Labor malpractices, campus repression at Valenzuela city school criticized

Screenshots have been circulating around social media concerning instances when teachers were threatened with losing their jobs due to their Facebook posts expressing views that are critical of the government.

MANILA — In less than 24 hours, a manifesto circulating online has gathered hundreds of signatures from teachers, students, and alumni of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela (PLV) as well as supporters from other schools. The petition titled “An Open Letter to Mayor Rex Gatchalian Regarding the Labor Malpractices and Campus Repression at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela” serves as a platform to expose the hardships of contractual teachers and censorship of the student publication, and seeks to “make necessary reforms in favor of a democratic teaching-learning community and academic freedom.”

Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian, however, initially shrugged them off as “baseless” while parading the mantra of PLV being “the factory of world-class national teachers.” He has since earned the ire of netizens which erupted from a Twitter-tirade between Gatchalian and Valenzuela-based writer Jerry Gracio.

Screenshots have been circulating around social media concerning instances when teachers were threatened with losing their jobs due to their Facebook posts expressing views that are critical of the government.

Dhanica Ocumen, a former teacher of PLV, exposed the delayed issuance of salaries, and absence of benefits such as 13th month pay. The petition mentions that eight out of 10 teachers in PLV are contractual. Ocumen said that the opinion of teachers and students were policed by the administration. An attempt to form a genuine faculty union was thwarted in 2017, when University President Nedeña Torralba prevented the teachers from having a dialogue with Mayor Gatchalian.

Teachers and students decry the active surveillance of their online accounts especially those whose names appear in the petition. The problem lies with strict draconian policies explicitly mentioned in PLV’s Memorandum of Understanding.

The petition from Google form had to migrate to Change.org since reports of fake signatories sprung to discredit the legitimacy of the grievances. At a time when the Anti-Terror Bill is on the verge of being signed into law, petitioners maintained that the “PLV administration’s suppression of progressive thought has instilled years of fear shrouded in economic injustice and restriction to freedom of expression.”

Teachers and students are asking for more support and continue to encourage the community to speak up through #ProtectPLVTeachers.
