MANILA – A priest of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente based in Iloilo has been subjected to surveillance on Jan. 30, an urgent alert circulating on various social media platform said.

“With the relentless attack against the Church and its shepherds, I cannot but feel threatened and enraged by the audacity of state forces who has openly targeted civilians – peace and justice advocates – in their so-called anti-insurgency war,” said Fr. Marco Sulayao, a priest of the IFI.

In the urgent alert, Fr. Sulayao said he was on his way to a clergy meeting in Bacolod City when he noticed three uniformed policemen seating nearby while he was aboard a fast craft. Then, upon reaching Bacolod, he again noticed seven soldiers eating at a table next to him in a local cafeteria. Several police officers also took photos of him and left without a word as soon as he stepped off the bus in San Carlos City at around 4:00 p.m.

Such attacks against the Church is not a first under the present administration. No less than President Rodrigo Duterte, himself, had publicly urged bystanders to kill and steal from so-called “rich” bishops.

Last year, IFI Bishop Antonio Ablon was openly vilified as a supporter of armed revolutionaries.

Fr. Sulayao, who is also the chairperson of the Promotion of Church Peoples Response in Panay-Guimaras, said he can only point out squarely to the police and the military should he be harmed, adding that “no other suspects will continue to attack the Church and its people under this tyrannical rule.”

Tailing of more IFI priests

The following day, on Jan. 31, more IFI priests were also tailed.

IFI National Program Coordinator Fr. Christopher Ablon said that two burly-looking men have subjected him and three other priests Marciano Carabio, Jerome Lito and Arnold Abuel to surveillance.

At around 7:00 p.m. on Jan. 31, they were informed by the security guard of the IFI National Cathedral that two men have been “nosing at the premises for more than an hour already.” The two were seen standing across the cathedral’s side entrance along Escoda street.

Fr. Ablon said that about 30 minutes later, they decided to once again go out for dinner and noticed that the two were still standing outside.

“Alarmed, I watched them closely. I can sense that they were not comfortable of my stare. Their body gestures show they were uncomfortable. They turn their faces away. The other one even turned his back to face the wall for a while. When he faced back again, he avoided my stare and even squatted. Both were making their bull caps useful,” he said.

The priests were still tailed as they took a tricycle with the two men riding their motorcycle.

“My colleague noticed that the one at the back ride put his hands inside the bag and took something shiny, then he covered it with a gray jacket. He alarmed us that they are just behind and told us what he saw,” Fr. Ablon said, adding that this prompted them to stop the tricycle and return to the cathedral while those following them were stuck in traffic.

Commitment to the marginalized amid attacks

Amid the attacks, IFI Bishop Felixberto Calang said that while they have no land or wealth to give, “we have ourselves to share.”

Our churches and establishments have always been open to everybody who seeks sanctuary especially the poor, oppressed and the marginalized,” said Bishop Calang in a statement.

The bishop said, “they want to intimidate us into silence because they know that our faith is an active service to the struggling people, which the state wants to crush.” (http://bulatlat.com)

IN PHOTOS: Different faiths, ‘one voice against tyranny’

PRESIDENT Duterte’s tirades against the Church are said to have bred the ongoing intimidation against people of faith. This has prompted various Christian denominations and groups to gather on January 25 in Manila to denounce what they call the incessant attacks and injustices perpetrated by the Duterte administration. Human rights advocates, families of political prisoners, and families of victims of the administration’s drug war joined the gathering.

Groups of nuns intently listen to the speakers of the ‘One Voice, One Faith, One Nation’. “Tama na po ang pababanta sa taong simbahan. Kampon lang ni Satanas ang gumagawa niyan,” former Education Sec. Bro. Armin Luistro says in his speech.

Members of Gabriela Party-list and the Saint Vincent School of Theology joined a human chain in Rajah Sulayman Park to symbolize their linked calls against state-sponsored human rights violations.

Nanette Castillo, mother of Tokhang victim Aldrin, wears a placard with the picture of his son. Groups also called for the immediate release of peace consultant Rey Casambre.

Lumad groups – who were driven away from their lands and are now in Metro Manila due to the severe militarization in their areas – also prepared an intricate quilt containing their calls.

“Hangga’t walang hustisya sa ating kapaligiran, kailanman ay walang katotohanan,” Bishop-Emeritus Teodoro Bacani speaks at the ‘One Voice’ gathering.

Linking NPAs to peace consultant’s murder a cover up, set stage to more killings – Sison

“…at worst, it is a defense mechanism to protect the real perpetrators by laying the blame elsewhere.”

MANILA – – “A brazen intrigue of the vilest kind,” is how National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) chief political consultant Jose Maria Sison described the allegation of Chief Superintendent Mario Espino, regional director of the Philippine National Police-Cagayan Valley.

Espino blamed the murder of NDFP consultant Randy Felix Malayao to the New People’s Army (NPA).

In a report, Espino said the killing may have something to do with his being a former NPA commander and demoralization among the revolutionary forces.

“It has two malicious and evil purposes: 1) to cover up the criminal responsibility of the murdering agents of the Duterte regime and 2) set the stage for further murders of suspected revolutionaries, peace and human rights advocates and critics by the death squads of the Duterte regime in the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines,” Sison said in a post in his social media account.

He dubbed Espino as an intriguer “for the benefit of Duterte and his death squads.”

Sison added, “Duterte and armed minions are digging their own graves because they are goading the NPA to launch more tactical offensives by way of demonstrating that they are targeting those responsible for the rising and expanding crimes of state terrorism. “

There is no other way, he said, to counter such claims and “attain a measure justice but to deliver more lethal blows on those perpetrating the crimes of state terrorism.”

Political prisoners from Camp Bagong Diwa meanwhile said Malayao’s murder is the consequence of Duterte’s order to the police and military to kill suspected members of the Communist Party of the Philippines and the NPA. They condemned the killing of Malayao.

They also criticized the Dutere administration’s disregard of the Joint Agreement for Safety and Immunity Guarantees (Jasig) signed by the both NDFP and Government of the Republic of the Philippines.
Malayao was also a former political prisoner. He was abducted, tortured, and charged with trumped-up charges in 2008 and was released in 2012.

‘Worn out lines’

Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay meanwhile said such allegations are “worn out lines” used by the military during the administration of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

“A theory so unbelievable that even United Nations Rapporteur Philip Alston has deemed such excuses as unacceptable,” said Palabay.

She said linking the NPA to the killing of Malayao is only to muddle the reality that it was state perpetrated.

“The PNP seems disinterested in a thorough investigation, as it prefers to quickly dismiss the case. At best, it is indicative of the typical dishonest, misleading and deceitful PNP who spins the most ludicrous of stories; at worst, it is a defense mechanism to protect the real perpetrators by laying the blame elsewhere,” Palabay said.

Malayao was shot by a lone gunman while asleep on Jan. 30 at 2:30 a.m. inside a bus he was riding going to Isabela, his home town. (http://bulatlat.com)

While the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) was having another significant milestone in the conduct of the plebiscite on the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), the peace-loving ‘tri-people’ communities in Tantangan, South Cotabato continues to nurture peace by working together. The people have chosen to find a solution to a decades-long problem of lack of potable water and respect each other’s differences.
